A unique feature of the Onteora Club is its art collection, which began in the 1890s when visiting painters pinned stetches to the walls of the Bear and Fox Inn. Today it includes over 150 paintings, drawings and photographs by artists who spent summers on the mountaintop, including Thomas Cole, Asher Durand, James Carroll Beckwith, John White Alexander, Edmund Blashfield, Albert Herter, George and Mary Reid, Elizabeth Roberts, Dora Wheeler Keith, Clara McChesney and outsider artist Malcolm McKesson.
Shown above is the entrance to Artist's Rock where Candance Wheeler memorialized her Hudson River School friends in 1896, having their names carved over a tiny spring with a panoramic outlook.
